Facebook users fleeced by hackers

We reported on a recent case of the Facebook scam where criminals are hacking into users Facebook accounts and tricking their friends and families into parting with money in order to help them out of whatever made-up situation the scammer has made up. See Hackers con gap year parents article for more information.

Since the story broke of Josh Hogg broke, a number of other people have come forward with similar stories and prove that it is not limited to South America. The FBI are warning that similar scams have occurred with American tourists visiting Britain.

It is expected that there will be an escalation of this type of criminal activity and we strongly recommend that travellers take precautionary measures to prevent falling victim to this type of ‘scam’.
